Halimeda
Halimeda calcareous algae grow well in environments with high calcium, medium light, very low levels of nitrates and phosphates, and low amounts of iron in the 0.05 ppm range. These macroalgae grow upright, many preferring sandy bottoms for attaching their fiberous rootlike holdfast structures. In nutrient rich reef aquariums they may require thinning. Calcified green algae, particularly the Halimeda spp., are especially important as major contributors of marine sediments. The white sand on many beaches around the world are largely composed of the sun-bleached and eroded calcium-carbonate remnants of calcareous green algae. This calcified sand is deposited from natural die off and consumption by some marine animals, such as the Caribbean sea urchin and Parrotfish.

Sea Fan / Mermaid Fan
The Udotea species are calcareous fans, meaning they are composed of or contain calcium carbonate, calcium, or limestone. The calcium content within Udotea gives them a hard fan with varying textured plates, and the plates often have lines of calcium carbonate deposits centered around the middle. Udotea usually anchor into sandy or muddy silt bottoms with a holdfast stemming from or around a single stalk.

Supplies
FragPods
We have two different sizes. FragPod I is a round bowl that provides the right depth to glue on a SPS or stony coral, and that allows it to have room for the base to grow. FragPod II is a larger disc that has four holes around the edge, and is designed for polyps, mushrooms and corals that like to grow horizontal. Both FragPods are designed to fit onto standard 12 x 12 egg crate. This makes fragging your corals much easier by keeping the glued coral still. Once the coral is attached, you can have a frag garden in your tank. Having all of your frags together, you can make sure they are all attaching and growing. Once the coral has a good base, you can place the coral in its permanent location or keep it on the egg crate for trading and selling. We have packaged six different amounts of FragPods for individual growout needs. We have packs of 12 and 24. Each package contains half FragPod I and half FragPod II. FragPod's I & II fit on standard egg crate that is sold at many hardware stores. The 0.5 thick FragGrids will let the FragPods sit flush with the bottom of the grid. FragPods are manufactured in the U.S.A. with PVC, using an injection mold and colored dark gray. They will not leach anything into the aquarium water. Just rinse them with freshwater and glue on the coral cuttings. They will quickly be covered with coralline algae and coral growth.
The steps in using FragPods are very easy and straight forward.
1. Cut coral.
2. Glue cutting onto FragPod.
3. Place FragPod onto FragGrid.
4. Watch coral grow!
